Windlass Mechanism:
In 1954, JH Hicks (The mechanics of the foot. I. The joints. J Anat. 1953 Oct;87(4):345–357) described the foot as an arch or arc-shaped triangle, composed of the calcaneus, the Chopart joint and metatarsal. The windlass mechanism is a natural mechanism of the foot that is active in the transition from the stance phase to the push-off phase. As the body's center of gravity moves forward, the ligaments in the arch of the foot are strained, and the big toe is bent. This makes the foot an effective lever with high propulsive energy. The following applies here: The more the element at the base of the big toe is lowered, the greater the tension.
